Ascension Day
Order at the touch of a button… and often within 24 hours you will have your order at home. The parcel services are working overtime. But in the past there was no internet. The transport of parcels also looked very different. Many goods were sent by rail. But how did that work? At Museumspoorlijn STAR we show you how it used to be on Ascension Day.
Freight transport by rail
In the first half of the twentieth century, freight transport by train was at its peak. Every station had a freight shed and many companies had a ‘railway connection’. Shunting locomotives provided the transport of wagons to companies. And from there it went to the customers by (freight) car. A big difference with the parcel services and container transport of today.
Packages on the train
All children can help transport parcels on this day. Pick up a parcel from the station attendant in Stadskanaal and take it with you on the train. At Veendam station, the parcels can be handed in at the lorry.
Ticket sales
Ticket sales start about a month before this event. Buy your ticket via our ticket shop, which you can then easily exchange for an authentic train ticket at the counter upon arrival at the station! Tickets can also be purchased at Stadskanaal and Veendam stations. The conductor will check and clip the ticket on the train.
The timetable will be announced at the beginning of the year.
