Rolling Stock Numbering System

The rolling stock of Museum Railway STAR is classified according to a fixed numbering system. Every vehicle carries a letter code followed by three digits. The letters indicate the type of vehicle. A quick look at the collection shows that we have 11 covered freight wagons (G211–G221). The number of K vehicles is 10 (K232–K234, K237, K238, K261–K265).

With this classification, it should not be difficult to work out what vehicles BD113 and BD144 are. An even greater challenge is to determine the numbers of the VAM wagons using the numbering system. That should be possible.

Do we know everything about our vehicles?

Unfortunately not. For several vehicles, the year of construction, manufacturer or first owner is still unknown. Research is ongoing, and any additional information is always welcome.

It is remarkable that almost every major Dutch railway vehicle manufacturer is represented at Museum Railway STAR: Allan Rotterdam, Werkspoor Amsterdam, Beijnes Haarlem and NoordNed Winschoten. Our oldest vehicle dates from 1898 and the newest from 1983, meaning that nearly 100 years of railway history are preserved at Museum Railway STAR.
