For many visitors, donors and volunteers at Museum Railway STAR, TE-5933 is an old friend. With her imposing appearance, red star on the smokebox door and characteristic deep whistle, the locomotive hauled our museum trains between Veendam, Stadskanaal and Musselkanaal for many years.
However, TE-5933 has been out of service since the end of 2014. After eight seasons of operation, an extensive overhaul was necessary. Work is now well underway to get the locomotive back into running condition. An important and costly part of this is the overhaul of the boiler.

The more than eighty-year-old riveted boiler is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Nevertheless, a great deal of work is required before TE-5933 can safely be put back into steam. Among other things, the fire tubes, flue tubes and a large number of staybolts need to be replaced.
This not only means a lot of work for our volunteers, but also considerable expense. Materials are costly, certain jobs require specialist welding and, ultimately, the locomotive must of course pass all the required inspections.
The complete overhaul will cost more than €50,000. We can fund a substantial part ourselves, but we need your help to continue the overhaul. That is why we are launching a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising €30,000.

We want to make the crowdfunding campaign as tangible as possible. That is why, as well as donating an amount of your choice, you can actually sponsor a component of the boiler.
For €50, you can sponsor a staybolt and receive a certificate. If you wish, you can also receive an old staybolt once it has been replaced. For €100, you can sponsor a fire tube. You will receive a certificate and a ticket for the locomotive’s official first run. For €250, you can sponsor a flue tube. You will receive a certificate and two tickets for the official first run following the overhaul.
Would you prefer to contribute an amount of your own choice? Of course you can.
Every euro helps.
TE-5933 was built in 1943 by BMAG (Schwarzkopff) in Berlin. The locomotive subsequently had a remarkable working life that took her to the Soviet Union, Ukraine and Germany, among other places. In 2006, she arrived in Stadskanaal and from 2007 onwards became a familiar sight hauling Museum Railway STAR trains.
Now we want to add a new chapter to that history. During this overhaul, we will restore her to the appearance she had when stationed in Ukraine in the 1950s.
With this overhaul, we are not only ensuring that a special steam locomotive is preserved. We want her to do again what she was originally built to do: run. So that visitors can once again see, hear and experience what steam traction is all about.
We could really use your help to make that happen!
Sponsor a staybolt, fire tube or flue tube, or donate an amount of your choice and help us get TE-5933 back in steam!
